Busting the Biggest Boudoir Myth: A San Diego Boudoir Photographer Tells All
I hear it all the time. A woman finds my San Diego boudoir portfolio, spends a few minutes clicking through the gallery, and then sends me a message that goes something like this: “These photos are absolutely beautiful — but I could never do this. I’m just not photogenic.”
I’ve been a boudoir photographer in San Diego for years, and I promise you: that is the sentence I hear more than any other. And every single time, I want to sit down with that woman and tell her the same thing I’m going to tell you right now.
Being photogenic is not something you either have or you don’t. It is not a genetic lottery that some women win and others lose. And it is absolutely not a box you need to check before you are allowed to book your boudoir session. The “I’m not photogenic” story is the biggest myth I encounter in my work.
Where That Story Comes From
When I ask women why they believe they are not photogenic, the answer is almost always the same: a lifetime of bad photos. The stiff family portrait, the mid-blink graduation shot, the unflattering angle from a friend’s phone at a birthday party. We collect these images like evidence and use them to build a case against ourselves.
But here is what I need you to understand: those photos were not taken by someone who was thinking about you. They were taken by someone who pointed a camera in your general direction and pressed a button. There was no thought given to the light, the angle, the pose, or how to make you feel at ease. That is not photography. That is just documentation.
What I do as a San Diego boudoir photographer is completely different. Every decision I make in a session — where to place you, how to angle the light, when to make you laugh, when to let the room go quiet — is made with one purpose: to show you as you actually are, at your most beautiful.
Posing Is My Job, Not Yours
One of the first things I tell every new client is this: you do not need to know how to pose. Please do not spend the week before your session studying poses on Pinterest or practicing in the mirror. That is my job, not yours.
I will guide you through every single moment of your session. I know which angles work for different body types, how to position your arms so they look natural and relaxed, how to create length and shape, and how to help you move between poses so everything feels fluid and easy. You will never be left standing in the of your boudoir photo session wondering what to do with your hands.
The women in my portfolio? The vast majority of them had never done anything like this before. What you see in those images is not some innate photogenic quality — it is what happens when someone feels guided and comfortable during their boudoir session.
Light Is Everything
I have to admit – I’m obsessed with lighting. I genuinely believe that everyone looks beautiful in the right light. This is not something I say to make clients feel better — it is something I have seen proven true, over and over again, in my studio.
The lighting most of us live under every day — fluorescent office lights, harsh overhead bulbs, the unforgiving flash of a smartphone — is genuinely terrible for almost every face. It flattens features, emphasizes texture, and creates shadows in all the wrong places. It is basically designed to make people look bad.
The light I use during my boudoir sessions does the opposite. When I’m carefully position my studio strobes, I am always thinking about how to use light to sculpt, to warm, and to flatter. It is one of the most powerful tools I have — and it makes an enormous difference.
What “Photogenic” Actually Means
After years of doing this work, I have come to believe that what people mean when they call someone photogenic has very little to do with their physical appearance. What they are really describing is how someone feels in front of a camera.
Tension shows up in photographs. So does ease, joy, and the quiet confidence that comes from feeling safe. When a client trusts me — when she knows I’m not going to let her look anything less than wonderful — something visibly relaxes in her. Her shoulders drop. Her expression opens. She stops performing for the camera and starts just being herself.
The images I take in the second half of every session are almost always the strongest. Not because anything about my client has changed, but because she has finally let herself settle in. That softness, that presence — that is what makes a great photograph. And it is available to every single woman who walks through my door.
What I See at Every Reveal
My favorite part of this job is the reveal at the end of your boudoir session. Every time, without fail, the client who was most convinced she would hate her photos is the one who goes the quietest when the images come up on the screen. Sometimes she cries. Sometimes she just stares. Sometimes she says, “Is that really me?”
Yes. That is really you. That has always been you. I just helped you see it.
These are not models or heavily retouched boudoir images of my clients. They are real San Diego women, seen clearly and honestly, in beautiful light, by someone who took the time to make them feel comfortable. That is the whole secret.
All You Have to Do Is Show Up
You do not need to be a certain size, age, or shape to work with me! You do not need to have ever felt beautiful in a photograph before. You do not need to be confident — nervous is completely fine. I have worked with nervous clients hundreds of times, and nervous women make some of my favorite images.
