pricing and booking

What is the purpose of boudoir photos?
Boudoir photography exists to help people see and celebrate their own bodies, whether that’s marking a personal milestone, healing a difficult relationship with self-image, or simply having a beautiful, intimate keepsake. For many of our clients, the purpose isn’t really about the photos at all, it’s about the experience of being seen, guided, and celebrated by an all-female team in a judgment-free space. The photos are what you keep. The confidence is what stays with you.
Maternity photography is a portrait session focused on documenting pregnancy, typically done in the third trimester when the belly is at its fullest. It can range from classic, elegant portraits to more intimate maternity boudoir sessions, depending on what feels right for you. At Monique Hoppe Photography, maternity sessions include the same professional hair, makeup, and wardrobe access as our other boudoir sessions.
Some of our favorite maternity boudoir concepts include silhouette poses using natural window light, draped fabric that follows the curve of the belly, partner-inclusive poses that capture connection rather than just the bump, and simple, editorial-style portraits using minimal styling to let the moment speak for itself. The best idea is usually the one that reflects how you actually feel right now, whether that’s glowing and confident or soft and reflective.

Boudoir photography in San Diego typically costs $600-$4,000 depending on the studio and what’s included. Most established studios charge a session fee of $590-$895 plus a collections investment starting around $1,200-$1,500 for final retouched images.

At Monique Hoppe Fine Art Portraits, we’ve moved to all-inclusive luxury collections with no hidden costs, starting at $1,400. Custom collections are also available. See our full pricing guide for details.

At luxury studios, yes. Professional hair and makeup is included. At budget or mid-range photographers, it’s often a separate cost, typically $250-$500.

At Monique Hoppe Fine Art Portraits, hair and makeup is included in every collection.

Yes. Common add-ons to ask about upfront are à la carte images beyond your package, fine art albums, wall art and canvas prints, and rush editing fees. Ask any studio for their full price list before booking, not just the starting session fee.

At Monique Hoppe Fine Art Portraits, we’ve moved to all-inclusive luxury collections with no hidden costs, starting at $1,400. Custom collections are also available. See our full pricing guide for details.

Most luxury San Diego boudoir studios book 4-8 weeks in advance. Popular dates, including before Valentine’s Day or October through December for holiday gifting, fill 2-3 months out. It’s always worth to check in for last minute openings. We always try to make it work.
Most clients book bridal boudoir 8 to 10 weeks before the wedding, which allows enough time for retouching and, if it’s a gift, for album or print production to arrive. Most of our printed products are made in Italy and take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive. Express delivery is available for an extra fee.

You can reschedule at no extra cost as long as it’s more than 24 hours before your session, one time. Life happens: if you get sick or an emergency comes up, we understand. If you need to reschedule more than once, a $300 rescheduling fee applies. Keep in mind that we’re often fully booked, so rescheduling sometimes means waiting a couple of weeks for your new session date. We’ll always try to get you back on the schedule as quickly as we can.

the experience

Do I need to be a certain size or fitness level for boudoir?

No. Professional boudoir photography is designed for every body type, age (18+), and experience level. Posing and lighting techniques exist specifically to flatter every figure. Everyone is welcome in my Carlsbad, CA studio. It’s a judgment free zone!

It’s common, and normal. Many or my clients tear up at some point, often from nerves easing into confidence.  I will slow down, check in, and never rushes a moment like that.

Plan on 3-5 hours total: 1.5-2 hours for professional hair and makeup, followed by 1-2 hours of shooting with multiple outfit changes, plus time afterward for in-person image selection.
No. While bridal boudoir is a common reason to book, most clients are celebrating a personal milestone: a birthday, a body-love journey, a post-partum season, or simply a gift to themselves.
Boudoir typically involves lingerie, wardrobe styling, and a bedroom or studio setting focused on sensual portraiture. Fine art nude leans further into artistic, often unclothed composition centered on form, light, and shadow rather than styling.

Yes, we offer couples boudoir sessions, though we don’t shoot erotica. Couples sessions follow a similar structure to individual sessions, but are styled and posed for two people.

A maternity silhouette is created by positioning the subject in profile against a bright, evenly lit background (often a window or a backlight) so the body’s outline is captured in sharp contrast while details fade into shadow. It’s one of the most popular maternity boudoir poses because it emphasizes the curve of the belly beautifully without requiring any nudity or difficult posing. Our photographers handle the lighting and positioning entirely, so all you need to do is stand where you’re guided.

wardrobe and preparation

What should I bring to my session?

Most luxury studios provide wardrobe through an in-house collection. Clients are welcome to bring meaningful personal pieces, like a partner’s shirt, favorite lingerie, or sentimental jewelry, but nothing is required in advance.

Our studio wardrobe collection has more than 200 pieces to choose from.

You’re welcome to bring your own clothing, but you don’t have to. Every session at my studio includes full access to our 200+ piece studio wardrobe collection, so you can arrive with nothing and still leave with dozens of stunning looks. Many clients bring one or two sentimental pieces (a partner’s shirt, a piece of lingerie with meaning) and build the rest of the session from our collection. We will help you choose outfits that flatter your body and match the mood you’re going for, whether that’s soft and romantic or bold and confident.

This depends on your package. Our entry-level collection includes 8 retouched images, our mid-tier package includes 25, and our luxury collection comes with 40 beautifully edited images. Additional images are always available for purchase.
Stay hydrated in the days leading up to your session and avoid trying new skincare products or treatments within 48 hours of shoot day.
Jewel tones (emerald, sapphire, deep burgundy), black, and ivory tend to be the most universally flattering colors for boudoir photography, since they photograph richly against most skin tones and studio lighting. That said, the “best” color is really the one that makes you feel most confident. Our styling team will help you choose colors and fabrics from our wardrobe collection that complement your specific skin tone, hair color, and the mood you want your images to capture.

privacy and logistics

Can I bring a friend for support?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring a friend along for comfort. I understand how hard it can feel to trust someone new with such an intimate session. That said, I don’t typically recommend it. I like to keep the shooting space private, since that privacy is part of what makes the experience feel safe and meaningful. Sessions tend to feel more powerful when you do them alone, without anyone else’s reactions in the room. But it’s entirely your call, and I’m happy either way.

I keep client images strictly confidential and never share them publicly without explicit written consent.
My studio is based in Carlsbad and commonly serves all of North San Diego County, including Encinitas, Del Mar, Oceanside, San Marcos, Vista, and La Jolla, as well as greater San Diego. I also offer travel sessions in Los Angeles, New York, and nationwide. If you’re interested in a session outside of San Diego County, reach out for more details.

preparation and special requests

Should I get a spray tan before my session?
A spray tan isn’t something we recommend before your session. It can shift the way your skin tone reads in photos, sometimes uneven or with an orange cast, especially under studio lighting. Your natural skin tone photographs beautifully, and our lighting and posing are designed to flatter you exactly as you are, no tan required.
Nails aren’t required for your session, but a fresh manicure can be a nice finishing touch since hands often end up in frame during posing. If you don’t have time to get them done beforehand, don’t worry, most poses keep hands relaxed and natural, and your photographer will guide you toward angles that look great either way. A simple, neutral polish or a quick at-home touch-up is usually more than enough if you want the extra polish without the extra appointment.
Absolutely, your session is built around you. Whether you’re drawn to soft and romantic tones, bold jewel colors, moody black and white, or a specific theme you’ve been dreaming up, just let your photographer know ahead of time. Our 200+ piece wardrobe collection has plenty of options to match your vision, and our styling team can help pull pieces and plan lighting around whatever aesthetic feels most like you.
Absolutely, every client is welcome at Monique Hoppe – Fine Art Portraits, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or relationship structure. Our studio is built to be a warm, judgment-free space for everyone, and that includes LGBTQ+ individuals and couples looking to celebrate their bodies and their relationships. Whether you’re booking a solo session or want to include a partner, our all-female team will work with you to create an experience that feels authentic and comfortable, not just accommodated.
Outdoor and on-location boudoir sessions are available by request, and they’re one of our favorite ways to change up the mood, whether that’s golden-hour light in a scenic outdoor spot or the character of a specific venue. Because logistics (location scouting, permits, travel, weather backup plans) vary session to session, we’ll work through the details with you during booking to make sure the location fits your vision and timeline.
There’s no wrong time to book, boudoir is a year-round experience, but a few seasons do tend to fill up faster. Valentine’s Day (January and early February) and the months leading into wedding season are our busiest, so booking a few weeks ahead during those windows gives you more flexibility on dates and faster turnaround. Outside of that, we typically have more availability and can often accommodate shorter notice.
Yes, maternity boudoir is one of the most requested session types we offer. It celebrates the body during pregnancy rather than hiding it, and it’s become one of the fastest-growing genres in boudoir photography. Sessions can be soft and intimate, bold and glamorous, or anything in between, and many clients choose to include their partner for part of the shoot. It’s a way to document a body and a moment in time that only happens once.
